Horace Carter was born November 25, 1934 to Monroe and Sarah Jane Lock Carter. Born and raised in Sparkman, Arkansas, he attended Sparkman Training School where he excelled as an athlete in basketball. He was offered a scholarship to the University of Monticello however, he opted to honorably serve in the US Army from 1957-1959, stationed in Germany.
After returning home from the military, he met and married the love of his life, Jeanie Jeanette Brim. Into this wedded bliss six children were born: Horace Jr, Ricky, Terrence, Kay, Carmen and Rockie. Horace Carter was a hardworking man. He worked a multitude of various positions, proving to be an awesome provider for his family. He retired from Dallas County Road Department with over twenty years of service.
Horace found Christ at an early age and became a faithful member of Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church. He became Superintendent of Sunday School for over 53 years and was later ordained as a Deacon where he served steadfastly for over forty-seven years.
Deacon Carter loved his family and was a sports fanatic. His greatest joy was watching his children and grandchildren excel in the classroom and in sports. He would often fill their hearts with laughter and often came up with nicknames for his grandchildren, family members and friends. Deacon Horace Carter was called home to glory on November 30, 2016. He will forever be thought of fondly by all who knew and loved him, especially his wife of over fifty-six years, children, and grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, and three brothers.
Those who remain to rejoice over his life include; his loving wife, Jeanie Jeanette Carter; 4 sons, Horace Carter Jr (Lane) of San Antonio, Texas, Ricky Carter of Scott, Arkansas, Terrence Carter (Rennetta) of Arkadelphia, Arkansas, and Rockie Carter (Lashanda) of San Antonio, Texas; two daughters, Kaye Butler (Tony) of San Antonio, Texas, Carmen Carter of Dallas, Texas; 3 sisters, Birdia Flint of Sparkman, Arkansas, Birthia Delamar of Sparkman, Arkansas, and Allene Carter of Arkadelphia, Arkansas. A special nephew, Samuel Johnson Jr of Arkadelphia, Arkansas, extended family members Rita Perkins and Ray Anthony Smith Jr of Little Rock, Arkansas;10 grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
Funeral services are under the direction of Mitchell Funeral Home in Arkadelphia, AR. Public visitation will be at Mitchell Funeral Home on Friday, December 2, 2016 from 11 a.m. -4:30 p.m. Family Hour will be at Macedonia Baptist Church in Sparkman, AR where Rev. J.L. Newborn is pastor from 6 p.m.- 7 p.m. The homegoing celebration service will be Saturday, November 3, 2016 at 1 p.m. at St. Paul A.M.E. Church in Arkadelphia where Rev. T.W. Scott is pastor. Officiating will be Rev. Louis A. Craig and Elder Bill Bowers will give the eulogy. Burial will be at Centerpoint cemetery in Sparkman, AR. Dinner will be served at Macedonia Baptist Church following the committal service.
