Mr. George D. Mitchell, Jr., 75, President and Chief Executive Officer of Mitchell Funeral Home of Arkadelphia, Arkansas slept peacefully into eternity on Friday, August 28, 2015, at his home. He lived a rich and full life that has left indelible impressions in the memory of the many lives that he touched.
His journey of life began in Prichard, Alabama, a small suburb of Mobile, on March 9, 1940, when he was born to Rev. George D. Mitchell, Sr. and Ms. Elsie Franklin Mitchell of Mobile, Alabama. He was pre-deceased by his parents; one brother, John B. Tate, and one sister, Ora Lee Johnson both of Mobile.
He was a graduate of Mattie T. Blount High School in Prichard, where he excelled as a student and as an athlete, especially in baseball. He was awarded a contract and an opportunity to become a professional baseball player following his high school years, but opted to attend mortuary school in Dallas, Texas.
While attending school in Dallas, he married his childhood sweetheart and the love of his life, Jodie Mae Stallworth, on February 20, 1959, at Good Street Baptist Church in Dallas, Texas. This special union was blessed with one daughter, Jacqueline Elaine Mitchell Craig; one granddaughter, Georgina Battle Wright; and one great-granddaughter, LiAsia Nicole Wright, all of Arkadelphia.
His stellar 52 year professional career began when he graduated from Dallas Institute-Gupton Jones College of Mortuary Science on February 28, 1963. Mr. Mitchell was licensed in Arkansas, Alabama and Texas; and was the recipient of numerous awards and recognitions.
Mr. Mitchell was a member of Greater Pleasant Hill Missionary Baptist Church. He served as a Trustee for many years. He was Chairman of the Trustees when the new sanctuary was erected in 1998.
Left to cherish beautiful memories of George are his loving wife of 56 years, Jodie Stallworth Mitchell,; daughter and son-in law, Reverend Louis Albert and Jacqueline Mitchell Craig; granddaughter and husband, Javories and Georgina Battle Wright; and one great-granddaughter, LiAsia Nicole Wright, all of Arkadelphia, Arkansas; two brothers, Samuel Mitchell of Little Rock, AR and Theodore Mitchell of Mobile, AL; one sister, Patricia Cook of Stockton, CA,; nephews, nieces, other relatives, mentees, and treasure trove of friends.
Visitation will take place at Mitchell Funeral Home on Saturday, September 5 from 12(noon)- 4:00 p.m.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m., Saturday at Greater Pleasant Hill Missionary Baptist Church, 1600 Caddo Street, Arkadelphia.
The life and legacy of Mr. Mitchell will be celebrated at Greater Pleasant Hill, Sunday, September 6, 2015, at 2:30 p.m. Dr. Lewis A. Shepherd, Jr will officiate; burial will be in Helms Cemetery.
