Rev. Betty Jo (Hawthorne) Gulley was born December 27, 1949 in Gurdon, (Clark County) Arkansas to the union of James Hawthorne (June 5, 2006) and Fannie Hawthorne (April 1, 2013). Both preceded her in death along with one brother, Willard James Hawthorne (July 8, 2010).
On Wednesday, October 2, 2013, after 63 seasons, she departed this life at Scott & White Hospital in Temple, Texas at 12:15 p.m.
She united with the Mt. Canaan Baptist Church in the early part of her life. She graduated from Henry Bell High School in 1967. She worked at the Arkadelphia Human Development Center until she retired in 2012.
Betty began pasturing at Bethel A.M.E. Church of Gurdon, Arkansas; Mt. Olive A.M.E. Church in Dalark, Arkansas; and Pastor of Greenhill A.M.E. Church in Blevins, Arkansas. She was a member of the Eastern Stars and also sang with the Heavenly Stars. She remained a loyal servant to the Lord until the end.
She loved preaching, teaching and counseling her fellowman and woman. Betty enriched the lives of many.
She was married to Ellis Gulley, Sr., which ended in divorce. Together they had four (4) children, namely: Victor (Kelley) Gulley of Little Rock, AR; Maurice (Maki) Gulley of Jacksonville, AR; Ellis Gulley, Jr. of Springfield, MO; and Tamika Gulley of Magnolia, AR. She leaves to her passing four (4) grandchildren and two (2) step-grandchildren.
She is also survived by her loving brothers and sisters: Margaret Hampton of Fayetteville, AR; Charles (Brenda) Hawthorne of Phoenix, AZ; Shirley (Floyd) Sims of Gurdon, AR; Jimmy (Joyce) Hawthorne, of Tulsa, OK; David (Ruth) Hawthorne of Arkadelphia, AR, who was an uncle but raised as a brother; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
