Vena Mae Ross

Psalms 121:1-2

I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the Lord, which made heaven and earth.

Vena Mae Ross was born to Ollie and Vena Mae Mitchell Hearn on June 14, 1926. She found love young and joined in Holy Matrimony to John H. Ross in 1946. They remained in wedded bliss until he passed on January 12, 1989. To this union four children were born: John, Paulette, Euthia, and Daphne.

Vena Mae, affectionately known as “ Lucy” or Boot” by friends and family, graduated from Richmond Hill Elementary School and began employment with the historic Oberman/Levi manufacturing Company. She worked many years as a presser and was also employed by The Arkadelphia School Systems and Happyland Childcare Center in the culinary department. She was an awesome chef!

Mother Ross was a lifetime member of New Antioch Missionary Baptist Church in Arkadelphia where she served in many capacities until her health failed. Mother Ross enjoyed church with a passion and strongly believed all of her help cometh from the Lord.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her daughter, Euthia Ross- Jones (Toot) and husband Ronnie Jones; son-in-law, Willie Stuart; Siblings, Willie Hearn, Leroy Hearn, Ollie Hearn, Jr., Dorothy Mae Clark, L.T. (Sam) Hearn, and Grandson, Brandon Michael Bailey. Those left to cherish her memory are: one son, John Paul Ross of Okolona, AR; two daughters, Daphne Ross Bailey, and Paulette Ross Stuart both of Arkadelphia, AR; eight grandchildren, John Ross McKinney, Melanie (Efren) Neely, Shannon McKinney- Young, Ronnie Lee (Myisha) Jones, Jr., Tesa Jones (William) McNeeley, Brandy Nichole Bailey- Jackson, Raven S. Bailey, Antone’ D.  (Meagan) Jones; 13 great grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends. Mama Lucy, you fought a good fight, now take your rest. 

Funeral services are under the direction of Mitchell Funeral Home of Arkadelphia, AR. Visitation will be Friday, March 1, 2019, at Mitchell Funeral Home from 12:00 noon-5:00 P.M. Funeral services will be on Saturday, March 2, 2019, at Antioch Missionary Baptist Church in Arkadelphia at 1:00 P.M. with Rev. Alvin S. Newburn as officiant and Rev. Jesse Newborn as eulogist. Burial will be at Richmond Hill Cemetery in Arkadelphia.
